About granite

Granite remains one of the toughest natural surfaces you can put in a kitchen: heat-tolerant, scratch-resistant, and widely available. The speckled 2000s look has largely been replaced by cleaner, more linear granites.

Because supply is broad, granite is often the best value per square foot for natural stone.

Specifier's tips

  • Leathered and honed finishes look far more current than high polish
  • Sealing every 1 – 2 years is enough for most granites
  • Darker granites show water spots and dust more readily

Frequently asked

Is granite dated?

Busy speckled granites are. Contemporary linear and leathered granites look entirely current.

Can I set a hot pan on it?

Granite tolerates heat well; the risk is thermal shock at a seam, so use a trivet near seams.
